I decided to write the introduction to this book myself. I could not trust even my closest friends to do the job for me. I was worried that they might try to sell you a lie. I feared that they might come up with some words like “James is an above average runner” or worse still, “James is actually quite good at this running thing”. I am not.
But I have run across America, 3200 miles in ten weeks during the worst heat wave in living memory. Not many people have done that. I have run in many amazing places over really long distances. Ernest Hemmingway said “there is no skill to writing, you just have to sit at the typewriter and bleed”. That has been my approach to both my running and my writing. I am not sure Churchill had ultra running in mind when he famously quoted his qualifications but that is all I have to offer you here no skill or talent just blood, sweat, toil and tears smeared over 350 pages and six years.
This is not a treatise on how to achieve ultra marathon awesomeness. It is an honest account of what ultra marathon running does to a person. I sincerely hope you don’t finish reading this book with the opinion that I am any good at this. I hope you don’t describe me as being “super human “ or “crazy” or other terms I have grown used to over the years. Instead, my goal is that you might complete the fourth line of this series of logical statements in a similar way to the way that I did at the start of this journey
1.James is a pretty regular guy
2. He’s done some amazing stuff
3.I’m a pretty regular guy/girl

Running and Stuff eBook James Adams
The story of the author's run across America could have stood as a book on its own, and it honestly reminded me of a travel/adventure story in the spirit of Bill Bryson, but the previous chapters gave great insight into the backstory and into the man's identity, adding to the appeal. Being a distance runner, but not (yet) an ultrarunner, I could relate very easily to some of the author's thoughts and feelings. In fact, he put into words some things that I have never been able to explain - post race depression, for example. He also described struggles that I have not yet experienced and I wonder if I ever will. I love love love this guy's humor. I could imagine sitting in a pub exchanging race recaps over a pint with him after running in a race simultaneously but separate. The only thing that kept the 5th star off my review was the fact that I was forced to stumble over several typos, and in one case he said the same thing twice, worded only slightly differently and separated by just a few pages.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good story about perseverance, distance running, or just a look into the life of a self-aware human being with an awesome sense of humor.

Running and Stuff eBook James Adams Reviews
I will never be a runner like this, but just reading it makes me think I might be able to survive a lot more than I thought I might. Thank you for honestly sharing the highs and lows and not just making this a fluff piece on the spirituality of running.
While this book is not as exciting as most running story books it is more realistic for the average runner or someone looking to get into distance running. Unfortunately, in a long distance running story, there is not much to say except 'Today, I ran some more'. The story was well told and the kept you enticed to read on. I will admit I have read lot of these types of stories in the past 6 months, so I might be a little jaded.
Why indeed. This very personal story of one man's passion (addiction? devolution?) into ultra distance running is raw and honest and an absolute joy. The best part? Attempt after attempt to explain what in the end seems indefinable (in a good way I think) Why do we go out and do a thing like run across the USA? Great read and a guy I'd like to sit and talk with...if only he'd slow down that long!
I was looking for a book that would look I into motivations and thoughts of an ultra runner. I got all that and so much more. Thank you James, for your perspective. It was super relatable. The technicalities and details were helpful. The book is a fantastic chronicle of some major races, including Badwater and Transamerica. I wish James all the best in his future endeavours and with his family! Again, awesome...
Overall, a great book that was motivating for people involved in pursuing ultra running. I enjoyed his humor and anecdotes during his training and races. The reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is because the editing was lacking - often there are repetitive phrases, or phrases are out of place, only to be addressed many paragraphs later. Probably the most annoying was the constant swapping of units - lbs/kg or miles/km.... just pick one. Or do both always.
But besides that, it was great to read about someones ultra running journey!
I am not sure what is more impressive in this book James amazing feet of running and endurance or the equally amazing miracle of how he fueled his runs with ice-cream and Mcdonalds across the US. Just the amount James ate Mcdonalds made me want to throw up without even running haha. Seriously how do you run 70 days strait 45-55 miles a day fueled by McD's and ice-cream? I must say I loved James writing style and his sarcastic and sadistic sense of humor. He says ultra running is about having great stories to tell and thats why he doesn't quit. Well said. This book is funny and inspiring.
I have no idea why I bought this book. The author must have posted something witty on a Facebook group I follow, and I must have thought, "Maybe this wouldn't be a waste of $8." Well it wasn't.
I had no idea what to expect from the book. I've read how-to books and deeply honest tell-alls. This was, in a way, both. On the one hand, this book is pretty much a straight memoir. "Here's how I got into running, and here is how I got through some of my races." It's refreshingly honest and open; the author makes no attempt to make himself look good (which ironically casts him in quite a better light than a self-styled champion).
But this book is also an unintentional how-to book in that you realize the secret to ultrarunning run, and run, and run, and when it hurts, when it sucks, when you want to give up or even when you already have given up, keep running. This book makes me want to throw a couple bottles of water and $20 in my pack and just go for a 12-hour run, just to see how it feels.
My only criticism of the book The version has no chapter divisions. It's just, in a sense, one long chapter. I would LOVE to see it broken down into different chapters, which has to be one of the easiest things to do.
